PAISAJE IMPOSIBLE

The crypt of this temple is an unequivocally structured space. The orderly arrangement of columns and ribbed vaults form a sturdy, rigid construction with no margin for interpretation. However, the fact that it is a crypt gives it a halo of mystery that shouldn’t be ignored.

Panorama, a fairground attraction that caused a stir in the 19th century, transported the spectator to the heart of famous battles or exotic landscapes. It usually consisted of a painting done on the interior of a large cylinder, offering a 360º vision to the observer who stood in the middle. By means of illusion, it was capable of transforming a finite interior space into an infinite exterior.

If we recognise that limits are the generators of space, acting on them allows us to create a new space, or at least the illusion of one. In this work, a new limit is established that blurs the space, creating the illusion of continuity. The spectator therefore finds themselves in the centre of an impossible landscape, un paisaje imposible.

Tomás López and Gorka Marcuerquiaga

THE AUTHORS

Tomàs López studied design at EINA (Centre Universitari d’Art i Disseny de Barcelona) and Gorka Marcuerquiaga studied architecture at ETSAB (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona). They run a studio located in the heart of the Gràcia neighbourhood in Barcelona, working with a team of young designers and architects.

They have shared a studio since 2010, a space in which they work on their own projects and, when appropriate, join forces to work side by side and offer an integrated service for architectural and interior design projects. In addition, they both design collections of furniture and objects to inhabit the spaces they create.
