L’ASSOC, Old Arab Baths

The current space, the result of the unification and restoration of three former premises in 2013, preserves a rich historical legacy. Visible elements include remains of a vault and a horseshoe arch from the Andalusian period (11th century), medieval arches (16th century), and more recent structures (17th–20th centuries), along with traces of two oil mills, a well, and underground presses.

During the restoration, carried out with a very light-touch approach, the vaults were consolidated and whitewashed, the interior courtyard was expanded, and the original structure and façade were recovered. The flooring was laid with concrete slabs, and the vertical walls were finished using earth from the site itself.

The main vault, carved into natural rock, lies seven meters below the house located on Plaça Massana, making the space a semi-underground environment. Archaeological excavations carried out in 2007 confirmed the Andalusian origin of part of the structures and suggest they may correspond to the “old Arab baths” mentioned in medieval texts.
