Old Gasworks
The only remaining elements of Tortosa’s old gas factory, built and put into operation in 1867, are five iron columns connected at the top by a metal lattice. At the end of each column is a small wheel from which a counterweight hangs. This mechanism supported, at the correct height, a metal platform shaped like an inverted dish, which was part of the system used to regulate the gas level and pressure for its distribution throughout the city.
The structure is located at the corner formed by the outer wall of the Suda in the Rastre neighborhood and the 14th-century city wall, behind the La Mercè School. The space once occupied by the factory, later incorporated into the school grounds, had previously been a moat.
